Development of an Improved Agarwood Inoculation Technique Project

(মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী কর্তৃক নির্দেশিত উন্নয়ন প্রকল্প)

Implementing AgencyBangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI)
MinistryEnvironment, Forest & Climate Change
Project Period2020 – 2026
CoverageNationwide – 6 Forest Divisions

Objectives

01

Technology Development

Develop a complete, standardised whole-tree inoculation protocol achieving high resin induction rates in Aquilaria malaccensis and allied species.

02

Quality Enhancement

Improve resin quality to meet or exceed international market benchmarks, increasing the economic value per tree for farmers.

03

Capacity Building

Train at least 2,000 farmers, forest officers, and extension workers in the improved inoculation technique and safe harvesting practices.

04

Policy Framework

Develop national guidelines, quality standards, and regulatory frameworks to support sustainable agarwood industry growth.

05

Conservation

Reduce harvesting pressure on natural forests by making cultivated-tree inoculation commercially viable nationwide.

06

Economic Impact

Contribute to rural livelihoods and foreign exchange earnings through increased export-quality agarwood production.

Implementation Timeline

2020

Project Inception

Official launch, team formation, baseline survey of existing Aquilaria populations, and laboratory establishment.

2021

Inoculant R&D

Screening of fungal strains and chemical elicitors; development and refinement of candidate inoculant formulations under lab conditions.

2022

Field Trials – Phase 1

Pilot inoculation trials on plantation trees in Sylhet and Chittagong Hill Tracts; data collection on resin induction and tree health.

2023

Scale-Up & Refinement

Expanding trials to Cox's Bazar, Mymensingh, and Tangail; protocol refinement based on Phase 1 results; first farmer demonstration plots.

2024–2025

Technology Transfer

National training workshops; publication of inoculation manuals; engagement with private sector for commercial scaling.

2026

Completion & Dissemination

Final evaluation, national policy recommendations, quality standard gazette notification, and project handover to permanent BFRI programme.
